The Blythes Are Quoted, by Lucy Maud Montgomery

Adultery, illegitimacy, misogyny, revenge, murder, despair, bitterness, hatred, and death—usually not the first terms associated with L.M. Montgomery. But in The Blythes Are Quoted, completed shortly before her death and never before published in its entirety, Montgomery brought these topics to the forefront in what she intended to be the ninth volume in her bestselling series featuring her beloved heroine Anne. Divided into two sections, one set before and one after the Great War of 1914—1918, The Blythes Are Quoted contains fifteen episodes that include an adult Anne and her family. Binding these short stories, Montgomery inserted sketches featuring Anne and Gilbert Blythe discussing poems by Anne and their middle son, Walter, who dies as a soldier in the war. By blending poetry, prose, and dialogue, Montgomery was experimenting with storytelling methods in ways she had never before attempted. The Blythes Are Quoted marks the final word of a writer whose work continues to fascinate readers all over the world.

An original serving of Anne - beautiful
By Mrs. Samantha Hayes
It's lovely to have an extra spoonful of Montgomery after many years of feeling hungry for more.

Most fans will already know that the book is the same as the ninth Anne book "The Road to Yesterday" only "The Blythes are Quoted" is the original text published in its entirety.

So, what's new? There is an entirely new story called "Some Fools and a Saint". This ghostly tale fits in well with the other stories in the collection and makes me wonder why it was left out of the original printing? All the stories have a twist of darkness - compared to other books by Montgomery. Vengful old ladies, criminal fathers, even a long buried murder feature, but each story is also beautiful, unique and have slices of comedy and romance.

Also new are many poems written by Anne and Walter, then there are Blythe family comments about the poetry. The comments are like gems, any Anne fan will just eat them up. The comments in the second half of the book are hints to what happened after "Rilla of Ingleside". Nothing substantual, but sweet. Only... maybe it is me but Gilbert seems to have turned a bit pompass, a little flippant. Judge for yourself.

This book is rare, I'm an Australian reader and could not find a copy for sale in Australia. Luckily Amazon's seller got it over from the States and delivered in just over a week.

Grab a cup of tea, snuggle down and enjoy this book.

Anne of Green Gables: A Last Word...
By HMS Warspite
Lucy Maud Montgomery published eight "Anne of Green Gables" novels between 1908 and 1939. In 1942, just before her death, she completed the manuscript for a ninth novel, "The Blythes are Quoted." It was finally published in complete form in 2009.

The format is a bit unusual: a collection of short stories about people living in and near Glen St. Mary, Prince Edward Island, in which the Blythes are supporting characters, and, amusingly, often the subject of gossip. The stories are connected by vignettes featuring Anne and Gilbert, their housekeeper Susan Baker, and the Blythe children. The timeframe of the book overlaps "Rainbow Valley" and extends to the Second World War.

The short stories are an interesting mixture. They include, among others, a clever ghost story,a child development expert's hilarious encounter with real children, and more than a few troubled romances; it appears Anne Blythe never outgrew her match-making propensities. The stories are by turns funny, wistful, and sometimes implausible, but are handled with Montgomery's customary skill and honesty.

The connecting vignettes may be the real attraction of this book. "Anne" fans knew she was a writer; the vignettes feature her poetry and commentary by family members. The poems are imaginative and moving, as we might expect. They speak to Anne's deep feelings about nature, her strongly-held ideas of home, and her passionate love for Gilbert. Some of the later poetry is by Anne's son Walter, killed in action in the First World War. Anne's and the family's lingering grief is vivid and moving.

The commentaries bring us loving banter between Gilbert and his "Anne-girl." There are insights into their long-ago romance. Gilbert will fret that he may have cut off Anne's writing career through marriage; she is quick to endorse her fulfilling life as wife and mother. Scattered through the commentaries and the stories, like buried treasure, are updates on the lives of the Blythe children and their Meredith neighbors. At the end, we know that Anne and Gilbert are grandparents, and a respected and beloved couple in Glen St. Mary.

"The Blythes are Quoted" is most highly recommended to fans of the "Anne of Green Gables" series as L.M. Montgomery's last word on her popular heroine.

Very satisfying for LMM fans
By Starshine
The Blythes are Quoted has most of the same stories as The Road to Yesterday but includes much more color and insight into the characters, human nature, and the perceptions of the surrounding community. I can say that as a HUGE LMM and Anne fan, I found the unedited version much more satisfying and delightful than the previously released version. I never get tired of reading her work.
Some of the versions are different than in the TRTY...for example, the story with Dick and Susette includes references to Anne's grandchildren rather than the Blythe kids. As the grandchildren share many of the same first names, it took me a moment to piece together the relationships; if you have read the previous books, it's not a problem (Jem & Faith's children are Jem Jr., Walter, Anne; Jerry Meredith and Nan have a daughter named Diana; Ken and Rilla have a son named Gilbert).
I always wondered what happened to Diana Blythe, Shirley Blythe, Carl Meredith, Persis Ford, etc. as they didn't feature as prominently in the later books. Una is still at home...Rilla wasn't the only one who suspected her love for Walter. Peppered in between are poems from Anne and Walter. It added a nice touch to the home life at Ingleside.

Overall, I am thrilled to have this new version. It will definitely be on my collector's shelf with the other books. I only wish that there were more...like a continuation of Emily.
