Although Fox, a "person young enough to have college in his rear-view mirror," has branched out into law and real estate, he did develop a study program for "at risk" students at the University of Texas and still runs series of lectures for prospective students. His own student experiences figure prominently in this guide, which he delivers with a swaggering self-assurance that occasionally threatens to overwhelm some of the good advice he has to offer. There's nothing new in his pushing "serious, steady effort" ("professors want some pain"), time management, and disciplined study strategies (limit TV, and no music while working, not ever), but he goes a bit further than most to counsel kids about getting to know campus services, finding mentors, and becoming involved in extracurricular activities. Salient points appear in boldface, and key ideas are listed at the close of each chapter, making skimming easy. The focus-on-studies-and-the-future approach will appeal to parents; kids will come away with a few helpful hints to get the job done (although few will follow the music advice). Stephanie Zvirin

Kick Ass in College

For any parent or student looking for the best advice and guidance for college, this is it. For the first time a no-nonsense blue print on how to succeed in college, written in such a way that entertains while it teaches. It appears that Gunner Fox has painstakingly collected all the wisdom of the sages and condensed it into one handy guide palatable for any age group. No matter if you have a son or daughter about to go off to college, or if you want to return to finished up your own education, this is a must read book.

Helpful but repetitive... some inaccuracies

As a high school teacher, I read this book to gain some ideas to help my students and those going to college this year. The book contains a lot of information that can be helpful to high school and college students, alike. Some of the information is repeated throughout the book; perhaps for those who skim but for those of us who read every word it became annoying. Some of the information is inaccurate so take this with a grain of salt and not for scripture. A lot of the book is devoted to three things: 1) studying (this section is good), 2) how to work the system to your advantage (this section is somewhat inaccurate and not the most honest approach to one's entry into adulthood), and 3) keeping healthy (most of this is okay but much of it should be common sense unless one has been living under a rock).

Gunnar's book offers readers the rare combination of solid advice from someone who knows what he is talking about presented in language that doesn't pull punches or put you to sleep. For those students who find themselves in the college haze of overstimulation from academic and socials demands, Kick Ass in College offers rock solid advice that, if followed, will allow readers to succeed in college while still having fun.
