About the Author
Booker T. Washington was an African-American teacher, author, presidential advisor, and civil-rights leader. Born in Virginia in 1856, Washington was of the last generation born into slavery. After emancipation, Washington attended college in Virginia, and gained fame as a result of his 1895 speech about the importance of educating African Americans and his belief that African Americans were capable of great feats through education. Washington s contribution to educational equality was made greater by his influence in the social circles of millionaires and self-starters, and he was the first African American invited to the White House by President Theodore Roosevelt.

Booker T. Washington published five books with the aid of ghost writers, among them his first autobiography The Story of My Life and Work and his bestselling second biography Up from Slavery, which earned him his invite to the White House. Washington was also responsible for founding the National Negro Business League, which has, since 1966, been incorporated into Washington D.C. as the National Business League.

One of the Best Books Ever!!!!

Though it has taken me over a year to read J.C. Ryle's Expository Thoughts on the Gospel, it has been quite a wonderful treat! To be fair, I'd tackle one gospel--absolutely love it--and then take a few months off before going on to the next gospel. I loved covering each gospel chapter by chapter. I loved how Ryle made a point to bring out the relevance of each chapter. I loved how each chapter was sub-divided as well. It made it easier for read. The book included that portion of Scripture, and then discussion of those verses. I thought it was well-written and still relevant. Ryle is a very passionate, very zealous author. Or was, I should probably say.

It may be old, but it doesn't come across so, and its usefulness is no less today than when it was originally written. It is truly a great and inspiring collection. I do, however, have one quibble with this particular ebook edition of it from publisher GLH.

GLH does not identify the TWO different Bible translations used in this edition, one by Ryle in his commentary portions, and the other in the Scripture portions preceding the commentary. Ryle uses the KJV (which is easily recognizable as such, and which would be appropriate for his era), but the other is an unidentified, not-so-recognizable, easier-to-read, modern version. This creates an inconsistency between what one first reads (in the modern version) and what one subsequently reads in Ryle's commentary on it (using the KJV). In effect, the more difficult version is used to explain the easier one (rather than the other way around), and specific KJV words or phrases that Ryle particularly emphasizes and chooses to address, are not readily identifiable in the modern Scripture portion since OTHER words have been used in their stead. This incongruity can be confusing at times. I would have preferred one translation -- either one -- to have been used consistently throughout, (though to avoid having to re-write Ryle's portions, the KJV would have been the logical choice to use throughout.) For these reasons, I have deducted one star from an otherwise 5-star set.

I was thrilled to read the first piece of his works that I got and had to go back into Amazon Kindle to get all his works that I could find.

An old folksong welled in my throat as I mended my net from last night's casting, and I sang a tune about Kwaku Ananse and the time he tried to trick a Deinopidae fisherman into doing his work for him. As I sang, I spun thick silk from the spinnerets in my fingertips and began the task of weaving the new silk where the old had been torn by salmo struggling to swim upstream. This time of year, they were so frantic to spawn I could walk through the river and pluck them by hand if I chose. But I enjoyed the craft of weaving, the precision of casting, and so I used my net.

Moonlight made the silver mesh spread over my lap glitter. My ankles were crossed, and my legs were becoming numb from sitting in this position for too long. Soon I would have to stretch. For now, I paid tribute with my song and let experience guide my hands as my mind drifted.

"I don't recognize the hero of your tune," a low voice murmured. "Who is Kwaku Ananse?"

I started at the sound of a male behind me, but forced my fingers to keep their rhythm. "Ananse is the trickster god of my people." I kept my tone casual. "My clan is Deinopidae. And yours?"

"I have no clan." Pain laced his words. "But once I would have declared myself Mimetidae."

I expected his answer. I had, after all, wandered onto Mimetidae land by virtue of following the river. That he claimed to be without a clan piqued my curiosity. "How did you manage that?"

I loved a good story. Perhaps in exchange for a salmo dinner I could coax his tale from him.

"You camp in a dangerous place," he said, ignoring my question. "Why are you here?"

I clicked my tongue. I would hear no stories from this surly male. "I'm following the river."

"Why?"

I drew a slim knife from the sheath in my boot in case my answer found me trouble. "This is the thirtieth summer of my life. Clan tradition demands I follow the river until I find my heart."

He scoffed. "You have no heart?"

"If I did, I would be heading home with him to build a house and start a family."

His exhale whistled through his teeth. "You mean you have no husband."

I frowned. "That's what I said."

"No," he answered slowly, as if doubting my intelligence. "You said you have no heart."

I waved aside his confusion. I knew what I meant. "What is a husband if not my heart?"

He remained quiet for so long I wondered if he had left.

I could turn to check, but it had become a sort of game. I didn't want to be the one who caved to curiosity and faced him. If he was content to stare at my back, then I should be content to let him. After all, what use did I have for his kind? Mimetidae were cannibals, and no male was taking a bite out of me. Let him look his fill. If he bared his fangs, well then, I had a knife, didn't I? Mimetidae might be fearsome warriors, but they bled the same red as I did. There was no gain without risk, I understood that. Part of the journey was triumphing over the dangers it presented.

With this male's arrival, it appeared my first true test had begun.

"Do you have a name?" he asked.

I chuckled to cover my sigh of relief at hearing his voice. I had been following the river for too long if such a blunt male made for the most stimulating company I had kept in months.

"My name is Daraja." It was a good name. It belonged to my greatmother. "And yours?"

He gave no response, though I waited until I mended three more rows in my net. Perhaps his name was one I might recognize, one with a vile reputation or an enticing scandal attached. With a curse, I admitted defeat and twisted around to see what required such deep thought on his part.

No one was there.

Great Book Overall

This was a pretty good book. It was long enough that it didn't feel like a novella, but short enough that you could read it one sitting. It didn't drag and was full of interesting characters.

It starts off when Daraja, a young Deinopidae woman, sets off on a quest to find herself a husband. She wanders around following a river, until she meets the ghostly ex-king Brynmore. He haunts the local forest and hangs out with a pack of canis. However, Daraja becomes a burst of colour in his dreary existence and BOOM! - we have a story.

If you've read the previous books (particularly A Feast of Souls) then you will already know Brynmore. Well, this book is about him getting his long-awaited happy ending. Hailey Edwards has done a really good job of turning him from a side character into a super-hot hero with a backstory that will make you love him.

While this was a good book overall, I still feel it was lacking something. I think we could have gotten a bit more world building. I know it's a novella and all, but I would have liked to have known a little more about the Deinopidae people. Just a little, because from what I've read of the previous books, all the clans are vastly different from each other - especially belief and culture-wise.

Also, a lot of things went unexplained throughout the book. Like how Brynmore came to be with the pack, how he has a tendency to just disappear at random times and how when his host gets injured, he's in mortal peril of vanishing into the incorporeal ether (in a kind of "my health affects your health" thing) but the next day he's fine, even though his host is still injured.

I did like it though. I love the fantasy world that Hailey Edwards has created and was excited to see Brynmore get his own book. Taking everything into account, I give it four out of five stars. It was very enjoyable!

A cast of shadows

In this fantasy, Daraja won't sit and wait for a man to follow the river to her clan and marry her. She wants to do her own walking... danger lurks in the forest however, and a pack of wild canids is prepared to hunt.

Daraja is from a clan who can weave silk from spinnerets in their fingers, and Brynmer is an insubstantial spirit tied to the body and mind of an alpha canid. The fisher girl is noticed but only when a canid is found dead and with its head and paws removed, does the pack regard her as a danger. Brynmer used to live in the nearest city, which is now teeming with plague victims. Daraja spots two men taking trophies from another dead animal, and realises that the items are sold as charms to ward off the plague.

Daraja doesn't understand at first that Brynmer is using strength from his partner to appear in living form to her. He had a sad past life, and the brave young woman reminds him of what it was like to talk to people rather than animals. Gradually he shares his story and she starts to wonder if she has walked far enough and found her match - but when she saves a pup's life and then has to choose between the hunters and the canids, a ghost is all she has for support.

I enjoyed A CAST OF SHADOWS which is part of a series by Hailey Edwards called 'Araneae Nation', and I liked the descriptions of the canids and the forest. However I would have liked to see a contrast, a glimpse of the city or a travelling barge of entertainers perhaps. Daraja is an independent young woman and has no intention of settling down without seeing a little of the world, so many readers will identify with this character.

Daraja is a Deinopidaeon on a traditional journey to find her one true love. Shade Brynmor comes across Daraja fishing with a net. From then on Daraja is on his mind and he feels very protective of her.

A fun, quick read. A Cast of Shadows is a novella - telling the story of Daraja & Brynmor. Brynmor was featured in the last book. If you wanted more of the character you won't want to miss this story. After everything Brynmor has been through, I'm glad he finally found some love and happiness. I loved the story, and have been really enjoying the series. If you haven't check the series out yet, I highly recommend you give it a try.

If your not familiar with Brynmor I would suggest reading A Feast for Souls, but it's not required to be able to enjoy this novella.

Questions for Marc Finks
Q: How did you ever decide to write about this topic?
A: I attended a speech given by David Batstone, and I was so moved and shocked by the stories that he told that I felt like I had to do something. I'm not really a good public speaker, but I thought that maybe I could write and help let people know about this issue...one that I had definitely not been aware of.
Q: How did you do research for your books?
A: I read as much as I could find about it, and then I actually visited Thailand and volunteered for a couple of weeks at a home for children who have been rescued from child slavery. A lot of their stories made their way into the second book. It's so sad and tragic, and yet....these children have hope and they are going to school and studying and trying to put the horrors behind them.
Q: What do you say for people who call this 'porn'? 
A: If people knew how hard it was for me to write several scenes..how disgusted and sad I felt to be writing them...then they would hopefully understand better that I did not get pleasure from writing a lot of the things in the first book. Terrible things happen to Tavi, but I tried to show it from his perspective and to show that - no matter what the clients think - it's not enjoyable for the children. It's pain. It's torture. It's rape.
Q: Do you have any words for people who are considering buying this book?
A: I tried to walk a fine line between showing too much and too little of what happens to these children. If you're hoping to find a voyeristic novel where you can enjoy the idea of child slavery, then I hope you are severely disappointed. If you're expecting a soft, happy, G-rated story, then you will probably be upset by what you read. I was upset writing the book, and I actually cringed when I wrote a couple of paragraphs.
Q: Do you think that your books have made any difference?
A: I hope so. I've received emails from people thanking me for letting them know that things like this are happening in the world. I don't know if anyone has actually acted upon their knowledge, but so many people are ignorant (or in denial) that these kinds of things are happening in today's world, and so maybe sharing knowledge is the first step.
Q: Will there be a third book in the series?
A: Readers have actually emailed me asking that, and I have to say 'no'. After two books, all I can do is just write more tragic tales about young people being abused. If you've read the two books, then thank you, but hopefully now you'll think, "Now I know that this is an issue. What can I do now?!"
Q: So, what are you working on these days?
A: I'm trying to write a fantasy series. The first book is out, but it's difficult. I want to be different (like everyone does), but I still find my line of thought converging back into traditional fantasy subplots.  I'm also making a choose-your-own adventure storybook app for toddlers and young children that I'm really excited about. Hopefully we can inspire more children to enjoy reading at a young age and help turn that love into a lifetime habit.

A powerful but flawed story

The problem of human trafficking is all too real, and runs throughout all human history. This story is an attempt to give it human faces. The structure of the story is reasonably put together, but I kept tripping over details that simply didn't ring quite true to human nature or to any actual place on the planet. Too various names and details didn't quite hold together as a whole. It is still a powerful story that with a few refinements could be even more compelling. Such human depravity can never be enjoyable to contemplate, but good stories can force us to greater understanding, empathy, and action. It is worth reading.

Telling it the way it is

Review of Boys For Sale

This is a grim and hard hitting book. A tough read. If you want to be entertained, look elsewhere. If you want humor or happy endings, likewise. Even the semi-redemption, towards the end, is slow in coming and somewhat vague. I found myself utterly depressed as I could not see where the story could go in order to satisfy or fulfill the reader in any way.
And then I realized that I was mistaken in my expectations, and that the writer had no intention of sticking to any script which necessarily gave the book mass-market popularity. What he was attempting was an exposure of simply one more sad endeavor that weak human beings engage in to materially enrich their sad lives at the expense of other human beings. And in describing this, of course, Marc Finks has succeeded brilliantly. There is no doubting the quality of his writing. It is able and craftsman-like. And, after around the middle, the book becomes genuinely exciting---if slightly implausible, but the latter is not a serious issue. Because some sort of release is needed from the narrative of unremitting gloom and hopelessness, and this the writer provides in a timely manner. The subject matter is something that he feels strongly about---and so should we all. There are not one or two nations that are unable to control the despicable sex slave trade of young people. There are many. And this is an absolute disgrace.
Some of the graphic detail provided almost made me lose my breakfast, but to my mind the writer is not indulging in this gratuitously; it is needed to sustain the sheer horror of the deplorable industry as described in this worthy book.
There is an attention to detail that could not have been achieved without considerable research, which makes this book all the more chillingly real and plausible. However, what really made me very sad was the fact that I could not see many human traffickers like Javier ever going down the route of contrition induced by the kind of changes in personal circumstances that he experienced. Everyone should be brave enough to read this book, and I congratulate Marc Finks on a fine piece of work.

It is rare to find a book of fiction that délas with the harsh reality of human trafficking; and, specially, when it involves boys. All sex-related crimes and also crimes related with sexual perversion are usually taboo. The fact that they can affect boys too is a taboo within the first one.
In this sense, I think Marc Fink's book is worth advertising, worth reading and a valuable addition to fiction literature.
It's not a literary masterpiece, and I found a couple of typos, but it is written correctly, and the story turns to be engaging and interesting; specially if you are unaware of how persons who deal with other people recruit them, break them and shove them into a vicious cycle of shame, addiction and crime that is really difficult to get out of. These aspects are well shown in the book, and -for the faint harted- the grimmest parts are very carefully handled; manageable descriptions that get the point across (however, I think the author becomes too careful in the firsts chapters -before Tavi leaves the village--and why the local kids are afraid to go near "the rocks" when they play could be better described).
I also liked what the author says in the prologue, which has to do with people not being all good or all bad. And I think this is a valuable approach to any character depiction, because I agree with this point of view. I think the author has managed to depict this in some ways. However, I must say, I didn't feel the way Javier López turns around at the end of the book. His double life was completely believable; I was hoping to get to know the "why" and the "how he got in that kind of business", but I've known of people who do terrible, criminal, things for work (or in some part of their life) and then come home and be "the perfect husband", "the perfect dad", "the perfect neighbor". You get that feeling with Lopez, until he changes his heart, so to speak, in a way that didn't seem realistic.
I also think you shouldn't start a book with a prologue when you are not going to mention the main characters of that prologue again in the book. When I first read it I thought "And what about the lady and her son?" Now, I know the book is part of a series, so we'll probably know more in the following book. However, maybe it is a question of style, but I wouldn't mention characters in a prologue that are not going to appear again -albeit briefly- in the same work. But, again, it is a minor issue.
Finally, another interesting aspect of the book is the mixture of landscapes, name origins, and situations. Some times you feel you are reading a story that takes place in India, and sometimes in the States. I think you could make a point of that, showing that human trafficking is a widespread problem; it happens everywhere.

Find a better edition.

This reprint edition is only the second volume of a larger work of the same title, published in 1911 by the Lewis Publishing Co in NY and Chicago.
This book contains pages 657 - 1168 of the original, a collection of disparate family memoirs, by no means comprehensive.
Most unhelpful is the lack of any table of contents or index.
If you can find a better annotated edition of this book then buy it. This one is not particularly useful.

Linda Fairstein is one of America’s foremost legal experts on violent crimes against women and children, and a former chief of the Manhattan District Attorney’s pioneering Special Victims Bureau. Nonfiction from Linda Fairstein

I subscribed to 5 of these short crime-related short writings of Ms. Fairstein. She is a favorite author of mine. But I was disappointed by their lack of depth and felt that they were money-making ventures. (However, I can't imagine Ms. Fairstein is lacking funds.) "The Most Surprising Crime" was a little longer and more detailed. However, I believe that if these writings were meant to be useful, they would have been much more expansive. Try "The Gift of Fear" by Gavin de Becker for a useful treatise on this subject.
