     KARLA FOUGHT TO STAY on her feet but couldn't-- then simply fought to stay conscious.
     She'd fallen into a large, cluttered room.
     Then she recognized it as the cafeteria where she'd eaten hundreds of stale lunches. This seemed right-- she'd fallen hard onto a long lunch table, sending some used, dirty dishware to the floor.
     No time to recover from the fall, though.
     She wasn't alone in the room.
     Dim light poured in from above but going back up that way wasn't possible.
     And she'd seen, as she fell, what were just to her left-- not running that way.
     Hopping down, she sprinted away from them but others were there, too, and she could feel their arms, fingers, slimy and shredded, reaching and grabbing for her.
     "No!"
     She broke free from the undead gimps and ran another way, but there were still more that way.     From every direction they were moving toward her-- dozens and dozens. Then, it seemed, a hundred, maybe hundreds, all had been locked away in the room, as if the First Patron had gathered them there like some waiting, zombie battalion.
     Another wall, only stacks upon stacks of chairs. It was all she had, she began to climb, uneasily up the stack.
     Their groans grew louder as more and more picked up her scent. Fingers and hands, slimy and sloppy reached for her but couldn't hold. Panicked, she would climb a few feet, slip a little, and climb more.
     This staggered progression, slathered with fear that she'd slip all the way to the bottom with every falter, she grunted and yelled, climbing higher and higher up the stacks of chairs.
     "Let GO!" she screamed as they grew closer and clawed at her leg, one leaving a yellowed fingernail stuck in her skin.
     At the top, she pushed at the ceiling above but it wouldn't give way.
     She crunched herself, like a crawling bug, into the small space between the top of the stack of chairs and the ceiling and looked down.
     A sea of grayed, bloodied faces. Yellowed eyes all wild and pleading, tongues lolling obscenely as their jaws worked, clamping down, opening, then down again in anticipation of her flesh in their mouths.
     "Get away from me!"
     More came.
     And then some began to push and press the others, crawling over top of them. Like ants crawling over each other toward a shard of rock candy stuck halfway up the wall.
     Even more poured in.
     New groups pushing past and over the previous one, moving higher and higher toward her.
     Her panic and terror swelled to its peak, then collapsed upon itself. Resignation. This was how she was going to die.
     It didn't matter. It didn't matter anymore.
     And then, she saw him.
     "Oh... no."
     It seemed cruel that when she'd given up, fate would deliver her yet another blow.
     Her heart broke for the second time that day, as she saw the young man that had given her his heart.
    But he was no longer a man.

...something old, something new, something blue - return of the homicidal carapace...

Okay, full disclosure moment, I got mad love for the original incarnation of Jaime Reyes. I was so damned cheesed when not only did BLUE BEETLE get canceled, but then the New 52 mandate came along. I'm still nursing a case of the bitters with DC's sweeping and very mercenary relaunch. I was very concerned about the treatment of Blue Beetle going forward. But I can't stay away from this comic book. BLUE BEETLE Vol. 1: METAMORPHOSIS collects the new series' first six issues. Tony Bedard writes the thing. Ig Guara draws the thing. But how does it fare compared to the awesome series it's opted to reinvent?

There's stuff that's familiar and stuff that's veered off what's familiar. Jaime Reyes pretty much remains true to character. He's a normal teenager but with a strong sense of responsibility toward his family and friends. We're reacquainted with Jaime's best friend Paco, who's still hanging with them bad elements, and Brenda del Vecchio, whose aunt happens to be El Paso's resident crime lord, La Dama. Except I don't remember the original La Dama dabbling in the dark arts.

How he ends up with the sentient and very homicidal alien scarab may be different, but Jaime does end up with it as it once more fuses itself to his spine. And once more Jaime is faced with a constant test of wills to see whether it's he or the ultra-aggressive scarab - whose name is "Khaji-Da" - who'll be giving the marching orders.

Will Jaime Reyes disobey his parents and attend Brenda's Quinceañera, which is being held at her Tia Amparo's suspiciously well-guarded compound? Can the Brotherhood of Evil recover the red backpack which contains the ancient and possibly cursed escarabajo azul? Or will the blue beetle artifact instead lodge itself in an unwitting Hispanic teen's spine? (I'm guessing yes to that last one.) Elsewhere, the Reach - a predatory alien race to which the A.I. scarab belongs - has pinpointed the location of the long-absent Khaji-Da and dispatches one of its soldiers. Tony Bedard doesn't waste time.

Speaking of, I remember Tony Bedard from his terrific stint at CrossGen Comics, and so I trust him as a storyteller, trust that whichever route he chooses to go with Jaime Reyes, no matter if he echoes the original Jaime's story arc or not, that it'll be a road worth exploring. I remember Ig Guara from bupkis, but I appreciate his clean linework and the expressiveness of his figures and that, unlike cover artist Tyler Kirkham, he renders the Beetle in appropriate body proportion. Jaime's Beetle isn't some overmuscled bodybuilder, Tyler Kirkham. He's just a kid and should be drawn that way. I guess it's super-gauche to mention that I miss the hell out of Cully Hamner's artwork.

I've hopes and certain expectations for this series, and, yeah, much of that go back to what I enjoyed in the previous series. I don't know when or if Jaime will reveal his identity to his family and friends, except that when he did that in the other series, his loved ones' awareness of his alter ego immediately layered in a new dynamic to the narrative. I absolutely loved that his little sister knew he was Blue Beetle. In this volume, it's possible that Bedard is seeking a new direction.

Thankfully, the backdrop is still El Paso, Texas. Gratifyingly, Bedard doesn't shy from embracing Jaime's ethnicity and from rooting him deep into his Hispanic culture. His heritage - and I guess that includes the Spanglish - is part and parcel of what makes Jaime Reyes such a fantastic and unique and real character.

Okay, I do have a few bones to pick. I don't subscribe to the notion of a supporting character gaining super powers, but that happens here. And, in issue six, Tony Bedard puts Blue Beetle in such a serious bind that the only way he could resolve his dilemma and outwit his adversary is by pretending that Khaji-Da is in full control. This leads to a pretty messed-up course of action on his part, considering who ends up paying for his deception. I guess what Jaime does makes sense in the context of the narrative and is even a pretty clever trick. Still, Bedard may get a protesting letter or two.

After reading this volume I guess I'm cautiously optimistic about this particular relaunch. Even under new management, Jaime Reyes remains very relatable. Bedard injects enough changes to make it seem fresh while retaining enough of the ingredients that made the previous series such a fun read. If nothing else, it's a better reiteration than the one we saw in the SMALLVILLE episode. So for now I'm on board with this new series, even if I'm still not sold on DC's New 52.

Outstanding re-debut for the all-new Blue Beetle

From issue #1 this title really grabbed my attention. I'm not a big Tony Beddard fan as I find most of what he writes to be too bogged down in story exposition and largely boring, but this was the opposite of that!

No, this isn't Ted Kord nor is it in any way related to him. He's not mentioned at all. This isn't even the same Jaime Reyes from the pre-New 52 DCU. It's an all-new origin story that actually starts at the beginning of this young hero's career.

As I started getting into this I couldn't help but see some very strong parallels to Spider-Man. There's the unwitting teenager caught in a bad situation, great power and responsibility, unrequited love, best friend turning worst enemy...yep, DC's version of Spider-Man...which has been canceled as of issue #16 due to lagging sales.

It's awful really, because this book had so much potential to be so much bigger. No, he's not a big name like Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman or even Aquaman these days, but he's no less interesting a character. And he's handled really well here and given a story that, above all else, makes you care about him.

This is a perfect book for the younger DC readers, too. Even though I enjoyed Teen Titans Vol. 1 for the most part, this is much better and seems to be more "in touch" with kids today. Don't dismiss this one just because you've never heard of Blue Beetle. If you've ever loved Spider-Man or if you're a current fan of Green Lantern, give this a shot.

Well Worth It

Brilliant comic, and fairly easy to get into if you are new to comics as well. I've heard things like, "DC Comics Answer to Spiderman" or whatever, and maybe that's true but it's a great answer. I enjoyed reading every page in this book, and am really saddened to know that DC Cancelled this series after Book Two, and it doesn't make sense because it's such a beautiful story. I was genuinely surprised at some plot twists, not thinking this book would "go there" but it did and I am thankful for it.

Even though the book ends after Volume Two, I suggest picking up Blue Beetle. Well worth it.

Grade 5-8–Mikey Elsinger and Margalo Epps are back in this fifth book in the series. Improbable best friends since fifth grade, the girls are now in ninth grade. Margalo has more than $200 stolen from her and tries to find the thieves. Mikey is thrown off the tennis team because she refuses to follow the advice of her coach and cheat on line calls. The girls both come up with a scheme to get rid of the bullies who are tormenting their dorky friend Hadrian and help a friend whose boyfriend is threatening to ruin her reputation if she doesn't have sex with him. Most teachers, guidance counselors, and administrators are no help at all; in fact, they add to the problems. Much of the book centers on the girls' table in the cafeteria, where the jockeying for position, one-upmanship, self-involvement, and shallowness are so obnoxious that it is as difficult to care about these kids as it is to keep the flat minor characters straight. Unfamiliar details, particularly about the girls' families, make this book difficult to read on its own. In this installment in the Bad Girls series, which began in 1996, Mikey and Margalo, now in ninth grade, face ethical issues: Mikey's tennis coach is subtly encouraging her to cheat, and Margalo must find a thief after a teacher refuses to become involved. Although there are some humorous moments, a lot of them fall flat, and the dialogue is unconvincing (Would a high-school bad girl really call someone a "no-good ratfink lunchpail bum"?). Yes, the girls are involved in noble causes and are dismayed by the lack of adult and peer concern, but the situation isn't believable. Voigt's previous books are better demonstrations of her skill, but diehard series fans will want this. Cindy Dobrez

The fourth book about the adventures of Bad Girls Mikey Elsinger and Margalo Epps, BAD GIRLS, BAD GIRLS, WHATCHA GONNA DO? happens over the course of Mikey and Margalo's ninth grade year. They've started high school, so, of course, things are going to be different! The two are rather surprised to find that people are asking them for advice, but, of course, between the two of them, there's always a plan.

The difficulties they face include an unfair tennis coach, bullies, thieves, and, well, ninth grade. Being Mikey and Margalo, they always come up with a way to fix things. It doesn't matter if it's against the rules; injustices have got to be corrected! It is, however, surprising that they have so much help with what they do; in fact, there's almost an entire lunch table full of people putting their various talents to use helping Mikey and Margalo!

Mikey and Margalo, despite the title of the book, do not seem to be particularly bad. In fact, they are almost too good to be realistic in the causes for which they choose to fight. They're fighting school bullies and trying to get the lines called fairly in tennis matches, not stealing lunch money or throwing spitballs at their teachers. However, even though they aren't the bad girls that the title suggests, Mikey and Margalo are fairly realistic and likeable characters.

I vaguely remember reading a couple of the previous books in the series a few years ago, and Mikey and Margalo were a lot more amusing then. This book, while at times a fun read, also had times where it dragged on and on. This book would have been five stars, had it been a couple hundred pages shorter (it's over four-hundred pages long)!

better than I expected

Having heard the protagonists, Mikey and Margalo, described as shallow and self-centered, I was expecting the worst. One might guess from that description that the teenagers wear nothing but name brands, belong to the "A-List" clique and spend their time making less popular students miserable. But the opposite is true. As for them and their friends being "self-centered," or "petty," that's a normal developmental stage for adolescents and not necessarily a sign that they are irredeemable. What else are teens going to discuss about at school but their problems, teachers, extracurriculars, and other students? For that matter, what do adults talk about when they get together?

The plots center around the girls trying to stop the bullying of a classmate and friend (how many "shallow" teens do that?), standing up to a tennis coach who wants her team to cheat on line calls, and tracking down a thief who has stolen Margalo's money. While the girls' inner strength and immunity to peer pressure sometimes seemed too good to be true, it's nice to read about adolescents who don't want to be a princess or a prom queen. Not all teen girls are willing to sell their souls to be popular, but this often isn't the message many teen books send.

My one complaint was that the book went on far too long. Some of the minor characters' developed conflicts and then disappeared only to have them solved in an overly pat manner.

A Little Disappointed!

Compared to some of the other teen novels I've been reading lately, this one came up a little short. Some of the situations seemed a little "contrived" and lacking in credibility, and the characters seemed to be too stereotypical and lacking in depth. It was still an enjoyable read, but I guess I was expecting "more" from such a fine author.

The 1st Armored Division formed the core of Multinational Division North to keep the peace in Bosnia in 1996. A Russian brigade was part of that effort. The Best of Never Again Vol 1

As an AOPA member and a private pilot I find these types of stories both interesting and useful as I'd rather learn from the mistakes of other rather than make them myself.

When I saw on an email from AOPA that they were to issue these going back over fifty years as an ebook I thought great.

$7.99 if bought from AOPA or $9.99 if bought from online stores - not being too clever with computers I opted for a purchase from Amazon via my usual 3G connection on the Kindle. The first sign that something was wrong was the charge was $11.99 rather than $9.99, but what the heck I am going to get lots of the reprint articles and $11.99 is not bad for such a book no matter how one looks at it.

So downloaded, started reading - and here the rub - less than an hour later finished - I thought I must have downloaded the preview rather then the book, but no I have the whole thing - no, I am not a speed reader - this "ebook" is rather short more of an "epamphlet".

The content was fine but I would not have bought the book had I known how short it was - the price is too high, it shoul;d be pitched at Kindle Single price levels.

I note the "Vol 1" my guess is that many volumes will follow buy them all and it will cost hundreds of dollars by the time one is done.

The only time in dealing with AOPA and Amazon that I feel truly ripped-off - if I knew how I would return the wretched thing and demand my money back.

The book is useful

An underlining of what all pilots should practice.. There are a few interesting stories,but for the most part it made me say, "what was that guy thinking?" which may be needed by some of the pilots that are out there. We have all had mechancical failures of one sort or another, or you soon will; be ready for it when you least expect it.

A trilogy to ponder!

Three short stories with the background of 9/11. I found it to be strange at first but when I finished it, I really liked it. (Notice I did not say that I enjoyed it)!

Starts out in Afghanistan, then to NYC the day of the attack and then it proceeds to the day after the mayhem.

Found it to be thought provoking and interesting.

Stories one and two I liked very much; they are very entertaining and give you the feeling of being there. Story three I didn't care for at all. That being said, it was a good purchase for an inside view of that astounding day in world history.
