Another amazing book from Nyrae Dawn

It's hard for me to critique this book really because I'm just a huge Nyrae Dawn fan...so I knew I'd love it before I even got 3 paragraphs in. And sure enough I was hooked from the get go and things in my life had to fall by the wayside so I could finish this stinkin book! ;)
Cheyenne and Colt's relationship may start off a bit rough.... (maybe cold's a better word?) but it's not long before you're clinging to every word, sucked in by the vortex that is their crazy relationship. One that makes you laugh....swoon....and root for them to open up and make it work. This book is about so much more than their love story too. These are real characters. With issues. And a plot line that brought tears to my eyes. If you liked What A Boy Wants & What A Boy Needs then you will LOVE this book. This is sorta like the college version of their stories. And I could not get enough Chey and Colt. I want more!!
The thing I love so much about Dawn is her talent with writing from the guy's perspective. I L.O.V.E.D. reading Colt's POV. If you hate "F" bombs then you may not love him as I do because it is his favorite word ;) but I'll take that over the "p" word any day. I just feel like Dawn nailed it... nailed his thoughts and speech....made me believe he's a real person....and made me want to get to know MORE about these two!! Dawn is definitely talented, to say the least.
If this is your 1st Nyrae Dawn book, I'm sure it won't be your last. When I see she or Liz Reinhardt or Steph Cambell or Tamara Webber have a new book out I'm like a kid on Christmas morning who was just told they're going to Disney world. Time stops and reading commences. I mean I was already in the midst of another book (that was good) that I was just reading when I had free time, but when I saw Charade was out I dropped that other book and ignored my poor family so I could read this. =) Yep, I'm a geek.
Would I recommend this? Of Course!
And I'll read it again for sure!

A beautiful story centered around two characters I couldn't get enough of!

Charade by Nyrae Dawn has not only made me an insta-fan of Nyrae but it also broke my heart in all the best ways possible. Chey and Colt are two incredible main characters that you will dislike at times, want to protect at other times, and love all of the time. The story pulls at the heart-strings when dealing with family issues while also keeping a swoony feel through the romance. And the romance people....just wow!
First I would like to commend Nyrae for doing such an incredible job for having an alternating POV book! I love when my stories get me in the heads of two characters I can't seem to get enough of and that is most definitely the case for Charade. I loved seeing how each character was coping, growing, and evolving into something so different but still staying true to the people they were at the core of it all.
Cheyenne has the art of masking her true emotions down to a science. She likes to make people think that her life is nothing but perfect but as the story progresses and we learn more about Chey's struggles, we also learn that perfect is far from the truth. Leaning on the people she should have been able to trust the most in life has led her to nothing but disappointment. The constant let-downs have caused Chey to create a shell around herself, one she doesn't intend on letting anyone through. I get what Chey was going through. While my childhood was not quite as dramatic as the main character's, it was still filled with lots of disappointment. So I know what it feels like to go through that and I know how much easier it can seem to just block people off. However, I have also learned that it is not good to keep that all bottled up. When friends and family tried reaching out to Chey and attempted to connect with her, Chey continually pushed them away. It took her a long time but eventually Chey did learn to let people in again and I loved watching her progress every step of the way. Despite all of the internal struggles and demons that Chey was working through, she was still an easy-to-love character.
Colt, much like Chey, has learned to distance himself from people by putting up a tough guy front. He has one love in his life and that is his mom. Okay, he has a few loves in his life aside from that which include drinking, cussing, and partying. Colt likes to play the part of a tough guy, but beneath that tough exterior you can see a scared boy. Colt's mom is sick and the thought of losing the one thing in life he loves and cares about, scares the crap out of him. My heart hurt for this beautiful, broken boy so much. His struggles in this book cut me to the core and being inside of his head was heart-wrenching but at the same time, it showed me just how great of a person he is underneath it all. He likes to act like he couldn't give a crap about anyone else but as he gets closer and closer to Chey, I could see how caring and generous he was for those that he loves. The voice that Nyrae gave this character was so authentic and full of such "boyness". Colt seemed like a real guy to me which made me love him all the more.
As much as I love Chey and Colt individually, I loved the two of them together even more! The start of their relationship is a bit unconventional to say the least. It all starts when Chey asks Colt to be her fake boyfriend to make an ex-boyfriend jealous. Chey grows a strong dislike for his bad boy attitude while Colt grows a strong dislike for Chey's princess attitude. It's safe to say that these two did not agree on a whole heck of a lot especially at the beginning of the book. However, after spending some time together there was one thing that these two characters could agree on, that there was certainly something more to their relationship than just a charade. What starts off as a pretend relationship of slight hostility between the two main characters soon turns into much, much more. In the beginning, Chey and Colt just wanted to use each other for their own personal reasons but that use turned into need once they realized how much they could rely on and trust one another. What their relationship eventually turns into was my favorite part of this book! Chey and Colt were there for each other through some of the hardest things they had to deal with in their lives thus far. Chey stays by Colt's side as he deals with his mom's illness and Colt helps Chey through all of her panic attacks as well as dealing with what is causing them. They may not have liked to admit it to themselves at the time, but the way they cared for one another was so tender and sweet. Crazy as it was, this romance worked and it worked so well! There was the constant push and pull between keeping up the charade and giving into their real emotions, the individual struggles with wanting to stay closed off and opening up to other people, and the tension that was built up throughout the first part of their relationship turned into something so crazy-beautiful. Chey and Colt together are one crazy whirlwind of emotion, trouble, pain, and passion but it is the exact kind of whirlwind love I enjoy reading the most!
Nyrae Dawn has made me an instant fan of her writing with Charade! I loved how she used the alternating POV to show off two incredible characters that despite what they originally thought, are so good for one another. Chey and Colt may not be perfect and they certainly have a lot to still work through, but I love that their relationship showed them that it is okay to rely on someone, to trust someone, and to fall in love. If you haven't read anything by Nyrae or heck, if you have read something by her but have yet to read Charade, I suggest you do so because you will not be disappointed!

Didn't live up to the hype

CHARADE was an okay book for me. I didn't love it and I didn't hate it, it was just a quick and fun read, with some serious parts. So if you're just looking for a fast read, with some serious moments in it, you could read CHARADE; but for me it just wasn't amazing.
I don't have anything to pinpoint that I didn't like about the book, it just wasn't anything special for me. I had a hard time picturing what Chayenne and Colt looked like, and for some reason that don't make me love a book. I guess when you can picture the characters well it maked you feel closer to them.
As for the story in CHARADE it is good. It starts out with Chayenne walking in on her boyfriend with another girl, he trying to beg her to stay with him, but she stays strong and leaves him. That's when she meets Colt, and try to convince him to be her pretend boyfriend so her ex will see that she can easily move on. From there everything evolves, and Chayenne and Colt get to know each other better, and they share their problems and try to solve them together.
I didn't have any favorite characters in this book, but I was intrigued by Colt's roommate Adrian. That's the only reason for why I might pick up the sequel, because he's one of the main characters in it!
