About the Author
C.E. Kilgore (1981 - ) has always had a love of romantic stories and science fiction. Although active in the writing community during her undergraduate studies, she chose to focus on her love of history and culture. Graduating with an HBA in History and a BA in Cultural Anthropology, she puts a deep emphasis on creating characters and environments within her writing that are full of both culture and history. The relationship development between characters and the worlds they live in is also an important aspect of her stories. Sarcasm, comedy, hidden "modern" references and subtle hints at underlined universal meanings are common within her writing style, but there is always plenty of action and a darker side lurking just around the corner.

Some good, some bad. 2.5 stars

Recommendation: Hardcore SciFi fans should avoid this book, but romance readers who also enjoy SciFi may find it palatable. This is book one of a series, or more accurately it is only the first section of a larger book. The romance part of the plot resolves, but absolutely nothing else does, so if you aren't willing to pay for the rest of the series you may be sorely disappointed.
I am conflicted about this book. There is some good in it, but also some serious flaws. The book is a space opera romance about a small crew of agents on a covert mission to find the source of a bioengineered plague. The ship's captain, Hankarron, appears to Central to be incapable of completing a covert mission without resorting to violent combat, so they are forcing him to take on a Vesparian empath as a negotiator and overseer for this mission. But everyone knows that Vesparians don't actually exist!
The author has created a fairly rich universe, with varied - albeit stereotypical - races, and good characterization. The "science" is deplorable. 25% gravity (one and a half times what there is on the moon) is depicted as if it were near zero gravity, with objects "floating" and "hovering" in the air. Localized gravity control is possible, even on a planet, but conveniently fails when the plot requires it to.
There are also a large number of annoying grammatical errors throughout the book. Those that occur within dialogue would be forgivable, but the omniscient narrator repeatedly uses phrases like "would of" (instead of "would have"). But in spite of all this I'm not completely opposed to the book. I usually read several books at once, reading a few pages from one, then putting it down to come back to later. But I repeatedly found myself picking this book up and ignoring the others. The writer's pacing, characterization, and style are excellent and kept me involved the whole way through. I saw another review that claimed the pacing was slow, but I disagree. Also, several reviewers have claimed to have trouble following the narrator's point of view from one character to the next, but again I didn't feel that way at all. The writing flowed very smoothly to me and I would love to see other series by the same author.
This particular series, however, I will surely not continue with. The main reason for that is the ending. This book earns from me the dubious award of having *THE SINGLE WORST ENDING I HAVE EVER READ.* I'm not a fan of cliffhanger endings to begin with. They are cheesy marketing schemes to tease you into wanting the sequel. But this was worse than just that. The mission the crew was on never gets completed. I don't mean that it will continue onto the next book, or that they failed. No, it just turns out that there never was a mission in the first place. Basically, the author has found a new twist on the "it was just a dream" trope - which was bad enough already and didn't need to be expanded on. Really...
FYI, for those that care. The book also fails the Bechdel test for female representation - but only just barely. There are strong female characters in this, but they really don't interact with each other.

A good Sci-Fi, Space Opera Romance

Corwint Central spaceship "Zera" departs on a covert operation to discover the source of the plague on the outlying colonies in the Ventaris system. The small crew of "Zara" are mostly young but experienced agents. The only problem they have is the percent of their captain, Hank, to blow things up and shoot first ask never. Corwint Central assigns another agent to the ship for this mission, a mysterious woman of a race that is not suppose to exist. The Vesparian, Orynn, comes aboard and the adventure begins.
Well, when I say "an adventure," I have to clarify that this novel is written by the "romance book rules," the main motive power behind the plot is the character conflict and romantic dynamics, not the action. The action is present and bad guys get blasted to bits and mutilated in different ways, and stuff gets blown up, but it almost seems secondary to the interactions between characters. It doesn't take away from reading the novel, but as a guy, I almost wish the main mission of "Zera" had a bit more of a sense of urgency.
My main critique for this book is the "head hopping" style of omniscient third person point of view. While it is done well in this book, it is a slippery slop and I would rather have seen a limited third person POV instead. It might make writing the story a little more complicated but in my opinion, it might make the scenes easier to follow.
This is, however, a minor thing - most books today are written in this style; who am I to judge?
The characters are interesting and their backgrounds are revealed slowly as the story unfolds. The main romantic plotline is shadowed by a secondary one between different characters, which is a nice touch.
The book ends on a cliffhanger. This one is actually a good one, of almost cinematic quality.
What can I say? My little criticisms notwithstanding, I've read the book to the end and I enjoyed it. That doesn't happen often. Recommended.

Engaging characters and brilliant world-building

I enjoyed the future worlds that Ms. Kilgore brings to life in her novel, The Ghost In The Machine. I won't go into a synopsis of the book as it has been done well in other reviews. This is my reaction to the book.
Ms. Kilgore structures multiple societies with depth and history revealed to the reader in layers of rich description interwoven in the storyline. I cared about the carefully crafted characters in the story, perhaps too much, for therein lies one of my chief complaints - competing points of view. Many characters are given a point of view and the rapid changes, sometimes from sentence to sentence created confusion in this reader's mind. Sometimes, I had to stop to figure out whose "head" I was in.
Putting that aside, this is an entertaining read right until the very end and the cliff-hanger of an ending. Which brings up my second complaint. I hate - with a passion - cliff-hangers.
Putting aside my particular foibles, I recommend this story for its engaging characters and brilliant world-building.
