Not a Complete Book

Eyeball to Eyeball (Final Failure) by Douglas Niles is an engrossing half-novel, alternate history. The premise assumes that nuclear weapons were used first by the Soviet Union. Khrushchev is brash and boastful in public, thinking & hoping that he can get medium range nuclear missiles in Cuba to threaten the US. He is also concerned that his bluff might not work. Kennedy looks calm and under control, but is secretly wondering what he can negotiate with to get out of the crisis. General Curtis Lemay, Air Force Chief-of-Staff, is a maniac, wanting to blast 'em now! SAC aircrew members were scared out of their gourds thinking the world was going to end. Trust me on this, I WAS THERE-as a co-pilot on a nuclear-laden B-47 medium bomber, thinking that the Ruskies are going to nuc my home base. "The wife and kids are gone. My bomb is going to count!" Fidel Castro, and especially Che Guevara, want to take over the Soviet missiles and strike the US. A Soviet sub captain with a nuclear torpedo, who has not heard from his headquarters in many hours, thinks they might be at war and.....
The tension builds, then the book STOPS!! What the heck! I'm going to have to wait and buy another book or two to find out what happens. I HATE THAT!!!!
I never caught on that the book was only the first episode. Be advised.

I felt duped!

From the description, I was looking forward to a fast paced historical thriller with a twist. Not the case.
The Pro’s For the most part, the historical background during the most tumultuous and possible deadliest time of modern history was dead on. Mr. Niles does an excellent job of mixing actual events during the Cuban Missile Crises, October 1962, with believable dialogue.
For the research, a healthy five stars.
Cons’
1) Send it to an editor. There is an abundance of misspelled and missing words throughout the work. At first it wasn’t bad, but as the story continued, it did become a distraction.
2) Filler: As the story attempted to move forward, I felt the author was deliberately trying to slow down the pace with minor characters and a back story love story which held no appeal or interest. No, I don’t care how it pans out. I want to see how the superpowers react with the downing of a US and the destruction of the USS Randolph.
3) This isn’t a spoiler alert, it’s a fact. At 50%, I was wondering why the story wasn’t developing steam and moving forward. At 75% I should have known what was going on, but I was hoping my premonition was wrong. Nope. I was dead on. This work was written as a setup for book II. Typically, I don’t have a problem reading a book knowing it’s a series, but that is not the case with this one. The description suggests readers will find this an entertaining “what if scenario.” I found myself fuming for being duped! My fault. I should have known. I will not be reading the second one as I was thoroughly put off with the charade.
Mr. Niles, I would suggest you stick with the fantasy realm where you have been very successful. Alternative history is not a field to enter. Those of us who have a love for history take offence when our passion and intelligence are toyed with. Imagine if David Robbins, “War of the Rats,” would have led us to the gates of Stalingrad and stopped , or Tom Clancy, “Clear and Present Danger” would have stopped as the bomb was dropped to eliminate the Columbian Cartel.
Overall this is a three star work, only because of the research.

The Cuban Missile Crisis - What if?

Those interested in what might have happened if President Kennedy had not been able to negotiate his way out of the Cuban Missile Crisis will find Eyeball to Eyeball very, very well worth your time. If you are familiar with Niles's work, Fox at the Front, etc., you won't be disappointed with this book. The book revolves around a series of characters in the United States, Cuba and the Kremlin, which gives it an expansive feel that is sometimes lacking from books dealing with the Crisis due to their focus on the high-level actions of the principals in Washington and Moscow. Be warned, this is the first in a series of books on the Crisis, and upon finishing the book I was disappointed that I couldn't immediately read the next installment. But, I am eagerly awaiting its appearance!
