About the Author
Described as one of the most influential figures in human history, Karl Marx was a German philosopher and economist who wrote extensively on the benefits of socialism and the flaws of free-market capitalism. His most notable works, Das Kapital and The Communist Manifesto (the latter of which was co-authored by his collaborator Friedrich Engels), have since become two of history s most important political and economic works. Marxism the term that has come to define the philosophical school of thought encompassing Marx s ideas about society, politics and economics was the foundation for the socialist movements of the twentieth century, including Leninism, Stalinism, Trotskyism, and Maoism. Despite the negative reputation associated with some of these movements and with Communism in general, Marx s view of a classless socialist society was a utopian one which did not include the possibility of dictatorship. Greatly influenced by the philosopher G. W. F. Hegel, Marx wrote in radical newspapers from his young adulthood, and can also be credited with founding the philosophy of dialectical materialism. Marx died in London in 1883 at the age of 64.

Marx and Engels at the Beginning

The Holy Family was the first text jointly authored by Karl Marx and Frederick Engels. It is a scathingly polemical work intended as an assault on the leading intellectual school of that time known as the New Hegelians. The title of the book is an ironic jab at two leading New Hegelians, the brothers Bruno and Edgar Bauer.
The Holy Family is not an easy read, and I would recommend it primarily for those who are interested in reading the entire corpus of Marx's literary output. It's still an interesting book in itself as an illustration of Marx's move from the idealism represented by Hegel to the materialism for which he and Engels were to become prophets. The book also marks Marx's and Engels' political shift to communism.
At first I was not clear of Marx's and Engels' intent. The subtitle of the book is "Critique of Critical Critique" and I thought it was a parodic title. In one of the earlier chapters, Marx and Engels attack Bauer's critique of Proudhon's critique of aspects of the French economic system. It was a third order critique -- a critique of a critique of a critique. However, as the book progressed, I came to understand that Critical Critique itself was a methodology utilized by the New Hegelians, and it was this methodology which was the subject of Marx's and Engels' criticism.
The book is worth the struggle through the earlier parts and becomes easier to read towards the end when Marx and Engels apply their new analytical approach to literary criticism, comparing and contrasting their analysis with the analyses of the same works produced by members of the school of Critical Critique.
One of the challenges of the book is not having access to the works Marx and Engels were criticizing. Only one of Bauer's books has been translated into English, and Marx was critical of numerous articles published by Bruno Bauer, his brother, and other members of the New Hegellians. Nevertheless, Marx's and Engels' erudition is quite impressive, showing a familiarity with the entire corpus of Western philosophical literature up to their time. I think this text would require a second read-through in order to be fully appreciated.
PS: I don't understand what the critic who only gave the book a single star was talking about. I found *none* of the issues he complained about in the text I read. Moreover, there isn't even a page 300 in the text! Therefore, all of his complaints have been corrected by the publisher. He admits in his "review" that he didn't even read the book, so that review should be taken with a LARGE grain of salt.

Beware of this publisher! This is a reprint of a much used library book.

I'm not going to review the book as a document. What I am doing here is reviewing this particular edition of the book as a material object. Be advised that this review which could wind up anywhere is of the 300 page Windham Press English Language edition of (June 6, 2013) with ISBN-10: 1628450347. As a material object this book doesn't even deserve one star! This edition is an absolute rip-off. It is nothing more than a photocopied version of what appears to be a much used library book. There are numerous pages with underlining and notes as well as Xs in the columns and starred passages including pages and passages marked on both sides of a single page squiggles through the page numbers and other notations too numerous too mention or describe. These occur throughout leading me to believe that this book was not simply the property of one person but was marked by numerous readers. There are numerous underlined passages consisting of whole sentences and whole paragraphs on pages 21, 29, 30, 33, 38, 40, 41, 73, 74, 77, 111, 112, 114, 213, 214, 268, 270, 272, 274, and 278. If I were to list all the other various marks and their frequency this would simply turn into a list of most pages in the book. It would perhaps be far less laborious to list those few pages where there are absolutely no marks but I will refrain. Obviously, I returned my copy without reading it so I still can't describe it or review the book itself.
