Great combination of mystery, suspense, and romance
By Rick R. Reed
I loved this book. It's the kind of book that leaps from the pages and lands squarely in one's imagination. Put another way, Diana Copland's prose is so effortless that you forget you're reading and are transported into the world she creates. And what a world! By turns chilling, haunting (literally and figuratively), and engrossing, Copland knows how to mix up the love story, the horror story, the thriller and turn them into one compelling and thoroughly satisfying read.

Excellent read!
By L. Ferdig
I was very excited to read this book. I know the author, and her style of writing, and hoped that that style would translate into original fiction.
It does. And how!
The premise, that of a police officer being guided to the body of a child by that child's ghost, is one that could lend itself to parody quite easily in the hands of a clumsy, untested author. Not only does Copland handle this delicate subject matter with care and compassion, she immediately pulls you in for the ride. The characters are well drawn, engaging, funny, and, in one case, annoying as hell. But that's part of telling a story. You don't have to love all of the characters, but you have to listen to them, because they each have something to say.
Det. Matt Bennett is your not-so-average cop: hard-nosed, pragmatic, believing in what he can see and feel and hear. So when that very system is challenged by the ghost of a six year old girl, he does something that, in ordinary circumstances, he never would. He tells what he saw. Big mistake. In an effort to pull Matt out of his funk, Sheila, his best friend, sister-in-law and resident pain in the ass, drags him to see a cable tv medium, Kiernan Fitzpatrick. Kiernan is a young man with the energy and spirit of a twelve year old on a perpetual sugar high. Witty, irreverent, with a suitcase full of t-shirts bearing sometimes inappropriate messages, Kiernan is easy to like. When it comes to his 'gift', that of communing with the souls of the departed, Kiernan is compelling to watch. Even the most disbelieving of people would be hard-pressed to deny what he is able to do. When he approaches Matt with a request for a private audience, Matt, and the reader begin a journey of discovery that keeps you turning the pages, deep into the night.
There is humor, heartbreak and romance, doled out in equal measures. But make no mistake, this is not your average three-quarters smut to one quarter plot. In fact, you're over two-thirds into the story before any sex happens. This is the downfall of many a would-be good story-sex over content. Not so here.
I was hooked from the first page, and almost sad to reach the end. By then, the characters felt like family. Pick this up and read it. You won't be sorry.

4.5 stars

If you are a fan of paranormal ghost stories, then you are going to love Diana Copland's A Reason to Believe. It is a captivating mystery starring Matt Bennett, a police detective who is quite skeptical of psychic phenomena and a famous medium, Kiernan Fitzpatrick.
Matt Bennett is no stranger to tragedy and he is still recovering from a traumatic loss of his own when he is called to the scene of a missing young girl. Matt is led to the victim's body by an unlikely source: the ghost of the victim, Abby. With his career already on the rocks, he is placed on administrative leave when he admits Abby's spirit led him to her body. In an attempt to help him understand what he experienced, his sister in law and best friend, Sheila, takes Matt to "A Paranormal Gathering" where Kiernan Fitzpatrick is conducting psychic readings. With Kiernan's (and Abby's) assistance, Matt is soon hot on the trail of a killer.
The two protagonists of A Reason to Believe are fully developed, three dimensional characters. Both men have complicated pasts and although their personalities are complete opposites, they perfectly balance one another. Matt is a no-nonsense and slightly cynical cop with a sharply analytical mind who does not believe in communing with the dead despite his experiences to the contrary. Kiernan is light-hearted, full of energy and the more impulsive of the two. He is comfortable with who he is and completely at ease with his psychic abilities. The chemistry between the two men is sizzling and their relationship positively simmers with sexual tension.
The mystery aspect of the storyline is very well done. Although I was able to guess the killer's identity fairly early on, I was completely stumped as to the motive for the murder. But what I really enjoyed the most about A Reason to Believe is the paranormal element of the plot. While I am not a fan of paranormal stories with shapeshifters, vampires, etc, I do love a good ghost story, and I can honestly say that Ms. Copland far exceeded my expectations with this part of the storyline. Kiernan's psychic readings were just incredible and Abby's ghostly appearances were spooky yet very moving.
A Reason to Believe is an outstanding read that I highly recommend to anyone who enjoys romantic suspense. It is an incredibly sexy romance with absolutely delightful cast of characters and a compelling mystery. Diana Copland is a fabulous author and I am crossing my fingers that we will see more of Matt and Kiernan in future books.
