Review
"The Bone Knife is intriguing. That says a lot. The plot is suspenseful, and I love the characters in it. Intisar is a wonderful author. She brings out her characters in a way that they are relatable, and her world is one that you want to immerse yourself in." - Anything in Fantasy 11/6/2012

"What a charming introduction to our characters. My only complaint was that the story was too short, so I was glad to hear that it was an introduction to a longer trilogy of books starring the main character. I look forward to learning more about Rae and seeing how she grows and progresses." - Books, Books and More Books 11/3/2012

From the Author
The Bone Knife is a short story introducing Rae, the heroine of the companion trilogy I am writing to my debut novel, "Thorn." I can't quite remember how Rae first introduced herself to me, but I've long enjoyed her curious mix of confidence, pragmatism and self-doubt, as well as her wry humor. As I began work on Book 1 of the trilogy, I tried to figure out something of Rae's family and past. I knew she came from a functional and caring--if somewhat flawed--family. And I knew she had somehow acquired a rather nifty bone knife. The story, therefore, is about Rae before her big adventure hits her, when she's still living at home. I hope you enjoy meeting Rae as much as I have enjoyed writing about her.

About the Author
Intisar Khanani grew up a nomad and world traveler. Born in Wisconsin, she has lived in five different states as well as in Jeddah on the coast of the Red Sea. She first remembers seeing snow on a wintry street in Zurich, Switzerland, and vaguely recollects having breakfast with the orangutans at the Singapore Zoo when she was five. She currently resides in Cincinnati, Ohio, with her husband and two young daughters. Until recently, Intisar wrote grants and developed projects to address community health with the Cincinnati Health Department, which was as close as she could get to saving the world. Now she focuses her time on her two passions: raising her family and writing fantasy. Intisar's current projects include a companion trilogy to Thorn, following the heroine introduced in her short story The Bone Knife, and The Sunbolt Chronicles, a novella serial following a young mage with a propensity to play hero, and her nemesis, a dark mage intent on taking over the Eleven Kingdoms.

Breaking Tradition
By Nat
You've probably noticed that in most of our stories with a young person as the main character, the MC is orphaned, or at least comes from a broken home. We assume as readers (and as writers) that stories about children have to be this way. If the child characters are going to have adventures, their parents have to get out of the way. The author has said that she wrote the Rae, the star of this short story, with the intention of breaking that trope. One of my favorite things about The Bone Knife is watching Rae interact with her family in a loving, but funny way, and still manage to have adventures. She even gets her parents' permission!
One of the other reviewers mentioned that she wanted to see Rae form a romantic attachment in this story. I was actually really pleased with the fact that the only relationships Rae had in this story were with her family.
We need more fiction like this that breaks the negative traditions that require main characters to have romantic relationships and come from broken homes.

Fantasy AND complex, realistic personal struggle against internalized oppression
By julia set-up disconnect
A girl with a disability whose internal growth is confronting and seeing past how those around her construct her as unfeminine and undesirable because of her disability is a YA fantasy hero? Oh, and she's the hero because she confronts issues head-on with planning, courage, and leadership, motivated by caring for her family, when there's another non-hero kid standing around with a unique in-born magical gift? This short story blew my mind. I can't wait to read more.

In far less than a novel length, I got a picture of someone using others' prejudice against their disability to empower themself while struggling against some aspects of that prejudice at the same time. This is something I've experienced in my own life and in conversations with people I know with disabilities, but it's not something I expected to read about. My favorite thing about the fantasy genre is its ability to shed a light on real life while letting imagination soar, escapism and unreality used to soften but also sharpen a conversation about reality. Only... most authors just do the escapist fantasy cliche stuff. This story stands so far above the rest.

Fantastic!
By Dani
Typically I find myself vaguely unsatisfied by short stories — not enough of the characters, not enough development, just… not enough. But there is SO much jam-packed into this little story; the character development and world building are both outstanding. With a birth defect that’s left her somewhat physically handicapped, Rae has become a strong, tough, resourceful, cool-headed young woman whose first priority is the protection and well-being of her family. Likewise, Genno, the faerie lord who visits their stables with the intention of purchasing some of her father’s horses, is mysteriously fascinating and his interactions with Rae are… compelling and full of all kinds of potential. And both of these fantastic characters are set in in an intriguingly magical world that I just must know more about.

Overall, The Bone Knife left me wanting more in the best possible way.

P.S. – Apparently Intisar Khanani is currently writing a full-length novel based on Rae, the main character of this short story… and I just want to say, “YAY!”
