The book sounds GREAT. But I will never read it because it is so ridiculously expensive.

Wow - this looks like a great book! I read a few pages on Google books and found it engaging and informative, and it would be a great thing to read to get more insight into the ethnic dynamics of SE Asia after WW2. The only problem is thgat this book costs over $100! What could possibly justify such a price for a book like this - all of the labor was done for free or was supported by a university or foundation., I bet the authors even had to pay for an index and get all the photo permissions with no help from the press. So what did the publisher do to deserve such a princely price? Did they take any risk? No - all they had to do was pay some poor jobless person to do the copyedit, and then email the galleys to the authors giving them a few days to do the proofreading. The printing and distribution is pretty easy too - the publisher probably just pays a fulfillment companby, and they probably did only a tiny first print run of 100 or 200 books. They probably lured the authors in with an empty promise that if the book "sells well" they might put it out in paperback (probably costing $50).
Why do academic authors allow themselves to be exploited like this? Why are universities willing to pay to buy back the work they paid the professors to do in the first place? They have to pay twice for the same book! Or three times if the publisher demanded a subsidy or page costs! And THE REAL kicker is that they are charging MORE for the kindle version than they charge for the hardback!! What kind of profiteering trick is that? They make even more outrageous profits since they dont have to pay printing or distribution costs. Academics have to play into this SCAM because the universities demand more and more production before they are willing to grant tenure - just another license for self-exploitation and overwork, the same thing that a PhD has become in this insane system.
