Referred to by some as perhaps B.H. Roberts' most important historical work, A Comprehensive History was published on April 6, 1930, the centennial of the Mormon Church's founding. Within its six volumes, Roberts chronicled the Mormon Church from its beginnings to the then present day, publishing major portions of its history, much of it for the first time. Not solely meant as a faith-promoting work, Roberts also sought within it to disprove many of the historical myths of Mormonism, utilizing the many different primary and secondary sources available to him at that time.

Detailed and well written

This is among the most thorough history bilks on the LDS church I've read. There is no whitewashing here. He documents everything and his research left nothing out.

Easy to read and understand

I expected, from and early 20th-century writer, something that would be a little hard to get through. Not so! Very understandable and accessible. It's not just a history; large parts are argument in favor of the LDS church or rebuttals to anti-LDS contentions. That part is revealing, too, but I'm more interested in the history. Many stories I haven't heard before, many details that add texture to the story of the church. I'm really enjoying these books!

Masterful History

"A Comprehensive History of the Church ..." grew out of a series of articles which B.H. Roberts wrote for the Americana magazine, between July 1909 to July 1915. Although not a trained historian, Roberts showed a faithfulness to documentary sources and rules of evidence. Using Prescott and Parkman as his models, his writing style has been described as "Romantic."
As Douglas Adler has put so well, "Roberts was pointing the way to a new approach; he wanted Church history to avoid apology and undiscriminating defense of the faith. For example, he was skeptical of including any myths parading as history: 'I find my own heart strengthened in the truth by getting rid of the untruth, the spectacular, the bizarre, as soon as I learn that it is based on worthless testimony' (Madsen, Defender of the Faith: The B.H. Roberts Story, p. 363). He treated the difficulties of the Saints in Missouri objectively, assigning some elements of blame to both sides."
Roberts was willing to deal with sensitive issues, such as the Mountain Meadows Massacre, and he was not afraid to include material that some might object. Nevertheless, Roberts believed that by showing the whole context, it would strongly support one's belief in the "Restoration of the Gospel."
When the LDS Church's centennial came, in 1930, Roberts expanded his original set of articles and brought things up to date to 1930 and had the set published as the "Comprehensive History of the Church." No one since has come even close to matching Robert's overall task, though later Historians have produced excellent books centering on specific areas of Church History.
Moreover, considering certain critical individuals claims of B.H. Roberts loss of faith in the early 1920s, this work, updated and rewritten in 1930, clearly demonstrates Roberts continued belief in the "Restoration."
