The Aranda have a complex system for intermarriages that divides all people into two groups and then four stages within each group. The system specifies where the children will live and how they will marry. The Arabanna use a different system for marriages, but somehow use the Aranda's marriage system for determining the sex and affiliation of reincarnated spirits. The structure has been borrowed and transposed, appropriated because of its ability to generate a certain economy independently of its substrate. About the Author
DICK LEHR is a professor of journalism at Boston University and a former reporter at the Boston Globe, where he won numerous awards and was a Pulitzer Prize finalist for investigative reporting. He is the author of The Fence: A Police Cover-up Along Boston's Racial Divide, which was an Edgar Award finalist and a Boston Globe bestseller. He is the co-author of several other books, including the national bestseller and Edgar Award-winning Black Mass: Whitey Bulger, the FBI, and a Devil's Deal. 

GERARD O'NEILL has won the Pulitzer Prize in journalism as well as many other national journalism awards. He was the longtime editor of the Boston Globe's award-winning investigative team. A very well written historical period.

This is probably the most interesting book I've read; I really didn't want to put it down. As unbelievably historical as it is to me to have occurred during my lifetime, it's hard to believe I never heard anything about it until his capture. And I even lived in California at the time. All the background information was additionally helpful. Even now, it is very surprising information.

A very enjoyable novella

Set in the same universe as Mr. Sigler's "The Rookie" series, "The Detective" tells the story of the Frederico Esteban Guissepe Gonzaga, as he searches for the family of Quentin Barns, and shedding some light on his own alternative life as well.

In a universe of FTL travel, organized crime, celerity sports stars, and alien races, some very 'down-to-earth' subjects are approached. Overcoming racism and bigotry are major themes in many of Scott Sigler's stories, and this work co-written by Matt Wallace, takes an honest approach. An espionage story, where the main character must hide who they are, and not flaunt it like some James Bond wannabe, in order to accomplish their mission, and get out alive. But they also must fight to be who they are, and struggle to accept the consequences of the compromises that they must make, in order to balance the two.

In the end, "The Detective" does a great job of entertaining with a good investigation story, which can be enjoyed on it's own, while also providing some food for thought on one's own preconceptions about other people. I devoured the story in short order, and as always with Scott Sigler's stories, found myself hungry to find out what happens next.

Sigler is an amazing writer and I have loved everything he has done for years now. I have only read one of Matt's books but it was a very good book. This two working together can only bring good things.
You will not be sorry buying this, the only problem I have is the loss of sleep because I must finish the story.
Shut up and take my money Sigler! Just take my money!
