Despite some eye rolling, a thoroughly entertaining read

As the title may suggest, this book is more of an anecdotal memoir of how the author has moved into a country house with his partner, and shed the hectic city lifestyle.

Among my thoughts while reading, the good floating at the top are: this book taught me more about the day-to-day behavior and care of poultry, than some Chicken 101s I've read; the author mingles entertaining stories from growing up in the UK with adventures and mishaps from their new country homestead in an entertaining way; and the writer's command of the English language greatly surpasses many other Kindle books on the sustainable living topic, making it an engaging read.

Only one thing kept distracting me from a full five star review. I am a conscientious omnivore, who seeks to find locally and humanely raised food, be it animal or plant based. With no intended criticism toward's the author's ethical dietary choices, the "meat is murder"-lecture does get repetitive after a few times. He paints a very black-and-white picture of factory farmed, tortured animals, or free range left-to-die-of-old-age livestock. Although the book was enjoyable, my "eye roll moments" were a little too frequent.

Beautifully written

The author has a beautiful way of painting pictures with words and this book has been a delight to read. I am not finished reading it yet and he has me thinking maybe I could raise chickens for eggs too. No pictures are needed,the descriptions of the farm and woods and wild life are so vivid and full of life. Any nature/animal lover will treasure this book and want to share it with others or read again. Thank you Derek Dubolski, keep writting.

About the Author

Yasuhiro Monden is professor emeritus at the University of Tsukuba, Japan. He also currently serves as visiting professor in the graduate program of the Nagoya University of Commerce and Business. Monden held the position of professor at Tsukuba University from 1983 to 2004. Before coming to Tsukuba, he was an associate professor in the School of Economics at Osaka Prefecture University (1971–83) and a research associate and assistant professor in the School of Law and Economics at Aichi University (1966–71).

He received his Ph.D. in Management Science and Engineering from the University of Tsukuba, where he also served as dean of the Graduate Program of Management Sciences and Public Policy Studies and as chairperson of the Institute of Policy and Planning Sciences. He received his MBA from Kobe University, Japan, and his Bachelor of Economics from Kwansei Gakuin University, Japan. Dr. Monden has gained valuable practical knowledge and experience from his research and related activities in the Japanese automobile industry.

He was instrumental in introducing the JIT production system to the United States. Toyota Production System is recognized as a JIT classic and was awarded the 1984 Nikkei Prize by the Nikkei Economic Journal. However, his research fields are wide, covering not only production and operations management but also managerial and financial accounting, corporate finance, and business economics. His dissertation title was "Basic Research on Transfer Pricing and Profit Allocation in Decentralized Organizations," and his recent research includes Management of Inter-Firm Networks Based on Incentive Prices."

Dr. Monden’s international activities have included visiting professorships at the State University of New York at Buffalo (1980–81), California State University in Los Angeles (1991–92), and Stockholm School of Economics in Sweden (1996). He was also regional director of the Production and Operations Management Society (POMS), and has acted as international director of the Management Accounting Section of the American Accounting Association (AAA). In the business world he served as a JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) expert in Singapore for guiding TPS in 1987. Also he acted as a JICA expert in Thailand for guiding Strategic Cost Management, in 1998. Dr. Monden also served as Second Examination Committee Member of the Japan Certified Public Accountant (2000–2003).

With all of the recent attention to "Lean Manufacturing" (Womak, The Machine That Changed The World, Lean Thinking), this book, now in its third edition, is different. Rather than telling you how to implement the Toyota Production System, Monden gives the reader a comprehensive technical description of how the entire system functions, and how the pieces work together to form the most effecient production system known.
This is not, however, a generic overview. This book covers Toyota's implementation as it applies to building their products. Nevertheless, the principles translate to every industry where things are made.
Any serious practitioner or industry leader attempting to implement or operate a lean production system needs to read, and re-read, this book.

Every single concept is transformed in a new idea with this wonderful tools that you need to learn if you are working at any industry with needs to reduce their waste, costs, improve the assembly lines,etc. As student of a master degree this book allowed me to understand concepts and information about the process of the TPS. Useful reference, will be better in latter editions

This book is a good introduction to the biology of fishes and covers freshwater and marine animals. I would give it 5 stars but the book has numerous errors and requires another round of editing. For example in one location the chlorine ion is written as Cl+. In another section an abbreviation is used 3-4 pages before it is even introduced. The typo's and poorly edited sections can make it hard to read portions of the book. However, when sections are well edited the book is an excellent reference or teaching guide.

Great Inspirational Book

I want to thank Antonia Geer and Shae Bynes very much for allowing God to let you share this wonderful book "The Kingdom Driven Entrepreneur. I always believed in GOD, but never really thought of him being the steerer of my business. Following the Bible principles in operating businesses that these talented young ladies spoke of in their book makes excellent sense.

As they said in the book "Every seed produces of its own kind (Genesis 1:11, Galatians 6:7). So one must plant a seed for success to achieve success. We have to put in the work to get the results we want.

If all entrepreneurs read and follow the Bible principles the authors write about in this book, I feel that great results can be gained.

Thanks Antonina and Shae for allowing God to use you to write this wonderful Bible inspired book that will bring blessings to all that read and follow. The Kingdom Driven Entrepreneur Companion Workbook is a perfect fit so that the readers can actually get greater results.

Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor E. Frankl is among the most influential works of psychiatric literature since Freud. The book begins with a lengthy, austere, and deeply moving personal essay about Frankl's imprisonment in Auschwitz and other concentration camps for five years, and his struggle during this time to find reasons to live. The second part of the book, called "Logotherapy in a Nutshell," describes the psychotherapeutic method that Frankl pioneered as a result of his experiences in the concentration camps. Freud believed that sexual instincts and urges were the driving force of humanity's life; Frankl, by contrast, believes that man's deepest desire is to search for meaning and purpose. Frankl's logotherapy, therefore, is much more compatible with Western religions than Freudian psychotherapy. This is a fascinating, sophisticated, and very human book. At times, Frankl's personal and professional discourses merge into a style of tremendous power. "Our generation is realistic, for we have come to know man as he really is," Frankl writes. "After all, man is that being who invented the gas chambers of Auschwitz; however, he is also that being who entered those gas chambers upright, with the Lord's Prayer or the Shema Yisrael on his lips."

Inspiring Book

I originally bought this book knowing nothing about Frankl, his experiences, or psychological theories. I simply read the description and a few of the overwhelmingly positive reviews here on Amazon and decided that it sounded interesting. What a life-changing book. Merely reading it at any given time has a marked positive influence on my attitude towards life.

What's most interesting about it, as Frankl says himself, is that what he's propounding are not abstract ideas developed by some academic at a university or in some research laboratory. He uses his direct experience in one of the most adverse circumstances possible--a Nazi concentration camp--to relate the ideas of logotherapy (his own school of psychotherapy) to the reader.

In a nutshell, the three most important tenets of logotherapy are as follows: (1) Life has meaning under all circumstances--even the most miserable ones; (2) Our main motivation for living is our will to find meaning in life; and (3) We have the freedom to find meaning in what we do, and what we experience, or at least in the stand we take when faced with a situation of unchangeable suffering. These principles are put directly to the test, and Frankl demonstrates their validity in a way that no social scientist has conceived of (or been able to) ever before.

"Frankl was once asked to express in one sentence the meaning of his own life. He wrote the response on paper and asked his students to guess what he had written. Needs More Margins

My review is not on the content of the book, but on the physical book (I bought the Mass Market Paperback). The publisher printed words so close to the binding, it's actually a pain to read. In the picture I posted to this, I'm actually having to forcibly push down on the book to make it flatter to see the words on the binding side of the pages. There should have been more room left so one doesn't have to do this.

If you have OCD on the spine conditions of your books, don't get the Mass Market Paperback, as your spine is going to end up creased pretty good after reading it.

Again, my review is only the physical book, not on the content, as I haven't started to read it yet :(

Effective

In writing Man's Search For Meaning, Frankl packed myriad life lessons, psychological insights, and self-help tricks into an incredibly short book, and did so almost as a byproduct of the (very compelling) story he was trying to tell. After all, not much that even Frankl can say can top the fact that he survived Auschwitz. Anyways, it took me a matter of days to tear through it, and when I was done, I found myself referencing it in my treatment of people, my conversations, and (as the title suggests) in my own search for meaning. Through his writing, I was able to realize that to embrace life, one must also embrace the pain that comes with. (Avoiding pain was getting stressful, so I needed that.)

Anyways, this book was an entertaining read (hence I was able to finish it), it had a noticeable effect on my life, and I can barely go one week without quoting it.

Totally worth the price.
