Excellent Introduction to JavaScript and HTML5

The first 6 chapters blew me away with its coverage of JavaScript. I really wasn't expecting an introduction to JavaScript from an HTML5 Book, but I am glad it did, however, as the first half of the book is an excellent introduction to using JavaScript for DOM Manipulation as well as passing data to and from web servers and 3rd party services using the XMLHttpRequest Object. If you are unfamiliar with JavaScript, I would recommend this as your first book for learning JavaScript. The focus on fundamentals was really refreshing. The examples were believable, interesting, and challenging. And, the whole problem-solution approach used in the Head First Series Books is very useful for both learning the theory and applying it in real-world scenarios.

The last half of the book takes all the JavaScript you learned in the first half and applies it to some of the new features in HTML5 like Geolocation, Canvas, Video, Web Storage, and Web Workers. I am still amazed by the Geolocation and Google Maps API example as I just did something similar for a client. Just like the coverage of JavaScript, you get a really solid introduction to using the HTML5 features as well as background on the problems they solve. As you can see from the list of features I mentioned above, the book doesn't cover all the new features in HTML5. As with all the Head First Books you get a list of the top 10 things they didn't cover and there is an appendix that lists many of the new HTML5 Tags that aren't covered, too.

If you haven't read a Head First Series Book, be prepared for a lot of diagrams, puzzles, pictures, speech bubbles, games, and other visual and gaming strategies to help you learn. I still haven't quite got used to it, but after reading Head First HTML5 I am convinced the books are worth it even if I am not a huge fan of all the strategies.

The book is very much targeted at beginners. If you are new to JavaScript and HTML5 and appreciate lots of images, Q&A's, puzzles, and other strategies to help you learn, I highly recommend the book.

I found the examples and projects to be interesting and meaty-enough to actually teach something useful. I'm sure I need more education on HTML5 and JavaScript than just this book, but I'm eager to dive in deeper to the topic now.

Hard book to read

This is a hard book to read. It's well-written and I like the author's writing style but by the end I was shaking my head muttering, "What?" I just didn't get the book. I like mysteries, thrillers, horror, and paranormal. I also like urban fiction. This book doesn't fit neatly into any of these categories. The story made no sense to me including those darn butterflies. I just don't want to have to think that hard to read a book.

Most exciting book I've read in a long time

"The Green-Eyed Monster" is not a murder mystery in the usual sense, but it does touch upon the mystery of why human beings kill one another in the first place: anger, revenge, insecurity, fear - jealousy. In this regard, I suppose, the entirety of human history is a murder mystery. This psychological thriller looks at the mysterious driving force behind the evil that befalls two men.

"There was a day in mid-April, 1971, when the sky over the Northern Californian town of Twilight Falls was deathly ill..." the author tells us, and then describes the simultaneous birth of the two boys, each born in silence with a blue butterfly lodged in his throat. The butterflies take flight, the baby boys are healthy, and miracles commence... People who have been depressed and suicidal begin to recover; a boy who has been lost in the violent storm is found alive and well. Later in grade school, students who share a classroom with the boys, Martin Smith and John Decker, seem to improve in their studies, gain strength and confidence in their lives. But not all remains idyllic in Twilight Falls.

Their first-grade teacher, who later falls prey to their influence in a very negative way, describes the first time she meets the two boys, who arrive in her classroom late on the first day of school:

They were attired in collared flannel shirts that inexplicably aged them beyond their tender years. One wore blue, the other red. Their backpacks were slung over their left shoulders, their faces were chalky white and their eyes absorbed the world through muscular prescription lenses. Given their similarity I thought they might be related; half-siblings, perhaps.

The two boys stared at me.

"What are your names?" I asked.

"JoMarny," they answered simultaneously. Somehow they appeared unaware of one another's presence.

Scientific research indicates that thousands of individual bees forming a hive, like ants forming a colony, behave as a single organism, in the way that a Quaking Aspen forest covering hundreds of acres is merely a single organism: one root with thousands of shoots. Could the minds of individuals similarly be of one mind, like a forest of Quaking Aspen? Might individuals share the same thoughts and ideas, invent new things simultaneously on opposite sides of the globe, create similar works of art without the aid of verbal communication?

It's probably easier for us to believe that aspen trees are shoots of the same organism; but ants? Bees? Humans? They all move around. How could they be connected to the same "roots"? This concept requires an understanding that historically the Western World has been taught to dismiss, and when faced with it, most of us still fail to see: that there is a psychic and physical connection between us that defies detection of the human eye.

In "The Green Eyed Monster", we discover that a force "like the force that keeps magnets from touching one another" is also the force that keeps the boys together, in the form of a mysterious Grandfather who is common to them both, an old man who tells the survivor, Martin Smith:

"Both you and Becker were one higher consciousness, shared by two human bodies and savagely imprisoned by human tendencies and emotions."

Aye, there's the rub: those human tendencies and emotions.

While his first book "Skunk Ape Semester" was in the ilk of "The X-Files", Mike Robinson's enthralling new novel is definitely a nightmare that could have seeped from the empty darkness of Rod Serling's "The Twilight Zone" -- a twisted tale of two boys who seem to share nearly identical thoughts, as revealed through their literary expression even in grade school, who grow up to be famous authors, living in each other's shadow while loathing one another. Their animosity eventually leads to the death of one.

Enter Detective Richard Porter, a fan of their writing, who must untangle the circumstances of the death, while weighing reports of other readers: a woman in Kansas who tried to sue the authors because she says she suffered some sort of psychotic episode while reading one of their books, or a teenager in Wisconsin who stabbed his girlfriend thinking she was some sort of evil character from a Becker or Smith novel.

This novel is as good as any you're going to find, a page-turner, an electron burner. I read this book in one sitting and decided to write this review. Now, I'm going to go back and read the book again, just to enjoy every nuance of Mike Robinson's excellent writing.

Horror Novel Reviews: Honesty in the Terror

Come along now, familiarize yourself with Mr. Mike Robinson and his ability to construct a novel that intrigues and entices. This tale proves that William Shakespere knew the true validity of his famous quote, "The pen is mightier than the sword." Prepare to enter into a realm that invokes deep thought as readers traverse territories once traveled by Dean Koontz (whose work was far more metaphysical in his earlier days), and often visited by Joe R. Lansdale. We're talking alternate universes, thoroughly explored and aligned for the curious mind to consider.

One day in mid-April, in a small town named Twilight Falls in Northern California, two women find themselves both going into labor simultaneously. On the same eve that these two mothers bring their sons into the world, the universe begins to change...in ways one would never expect. Typically seen together (the boys are neighbors) but not necessarily close, these youngsters begin to showcase extraordinary minds at an early age. They also have a very deep-rooted rivalry that starts in earliest childhood and continues on throughout their lives. Both grow to be profoundly powerful writers; born with the ability to heal, manipulate and even kill, these two are gifted in the most unorthodox ways imaginable. Not only similar in physical appearance, they also share some remarkable similarities in their writing. As they mature their rivalry increases until adulthood sees their feud begin to spin out of control.

But these young men are not exactly alone in their complex existence: since shortly after birth they have spoken of "Grandfather", a mysterious entity not of this world. I'll tell you right now: you're going to need to check this one out in order to learn the significance of "Grandfather", as we're talking about a crucial piece of the grand puzzle that can't be thoroughly excavated without riddling this review with spoilers.

By first grade both of these boys (bestowed the names Martin Smith and John Becker) begin displaying astute yet very odd behavior, often carrying on conversations about their real purpose. Their teacher, Mrs.Chatsworth is amazed by the two, finding their uniqueness both wonderful and frightening. In Mrs. Chatsworth we meet our first victim: an unfortunate example of what can happen to anyone who rubs these intense youngsters the wrong way. While all she really aims to do is establish a higher quality of education for the boys, they misconstrue her intention and perceive it as rejection. As a result, we're reminded of the potential power the pair wield.

Within the walls of the classroom we find a young boy named Harry Zwieg. Both envious and awe-struck by Martin and John, Harry serves as the catalyst for future disasters. As is the case with our two focal characters, Harry's growth is well documented throughout the novel. Eager to craft an article about Martin, John and their literary success for his high school paper, Harry eventually approaches both of them in search of interviews. Both respond in odd ways, making strange statements and showcasing a knowledge of Harry's existence that neither should possess. Our inquisitive interviewer finds himself entangled in a slew of oddities that eventually lead to the death of sixteen students.

The Green-Eyed Monster makes for an excellent read with a staggering measure of depth. This isn't your typical gory horror story, it's a character study with heavy metaphysical influences. If you are familiar with famed Swiss psychotherapist and psychiatrist, Carl Jung and his view of the collective unconscious being, you've already got a clearer idea of what to expect of this novel than those foreign to Jung's career and views. That said, it's not necessary for readers to be well-versed in the axioms of the late Jung to enjoy this book. Robinson's done a great job establishing his own prose, and his work stands on it's own two legs; I only mention Jung because you'll find a good deal of his beliefs in the pages of The Green-Eyed Monster.

In my opinion this book is very, very well assembled and earns a solid recommendation from me: give it a read! I am glad I did and I'm looking forward to further exploring the mind of Mike Robinson. The man effectively births compelling characters and thought provoking ideas. The fact that he's got a wonderful understanding of proper pacing goes a long way in the making of a stimulating novel.

"If you can't be with the one you love, love the one you're with" could be a mantra for our heroine, Vivien, in this book. The book begins with a hot, steamy mmf menage to celebrate her birthday. During the menage she realizes that while her flesh is being pleased her heart is not in it and something is missing from her life. The author does an excellent job of turning what could have been construed as a harlot into a woman with many dimensions and giving the reader insight to see past her actions to the woman underneath. Vivien is a mistress and has been known as the mistress matchmaker. However, two of her matches involving her closest friends developed into marriage. It makes Vivien wonder if true love really exists and each time her mind conjures up images of her last protector, Benedict.

Benedict is a member of an aristocratic family with noble blood lines. He confessed his love for Vivien 3 years ago only to have her throw it back in his face and break off the relationship. He hasn't been able to forget Vivien or move on to another relationship even with the impassioned pleas of his brother and mother to get married to a suitable woman.

Vivien and Benedict are reunited at an event and Vivien finds herself unable to extend one last invitation to her bedchamber. Benedict accepts and the two are once again in a tempestuous affair. This time Vivien is determined to get Benedict out of her system, leave London, and begin her life afresh in another country unbeknownst to Benedict. But--true love---changes many plans. Despite Benedict's brother asking her to leave his brother so that he won't be disregarded by society and disowned by his family. Vivien realizes that she loves him and being with him would be to his detriment. So she determines to leave town immediately without telling him. However, our noble hero is one step ahead and manages to save the day and the relationship just in time.

This was such a sweet, sweet story of two people that love each other so much but life seems to continue to get in the way. It is a story of love, acceptance, and hope. It's one of those stories that makes your heart absolutely melt. A hero that gives up everything for the one he loves, and a heroine that refuses to be held to the mistakes of her past to experience real love. The characters were multi-layered and the plot contained numerous twists to keep the story moving along at a steady pace. This was a quick read that I had to finish because I became so invested in the lives of these characters. The ultimate gift from the author is an epilogue where we see that true love indeed conquers all.

Jess Michaels is a literary goddess and now one of my very favorite authors!!!! I believe this book is the very first historical romance book where the female lead character doesn't sit at home twiddling her thumbs, celibate, and bemoaning her fate to live without her one true love. Bravo to Ms Michaels for taking a well executed risk that sets readers up for the read of a lifetime.

All Good Things Must Come to an End!

Jess Michaels does it again folks! This book was by far my favorite out of the series. Vivien has been a character in each book. She has been someone you want to find happiness and above all I really wanted to know more about her . How she became a mistress matchmaker?

In Vivien's story you learn so much about her, things I don't think the reader will expect. A good surprise. She has a past and seeks closure. She also has things she wishes to do before leaving the business for good.

Perfect Match, Perfect Ending

I really enjoyed reading Her Perfect Match. We finally get to read Vivian's story! I'll try very hard to not give anything away in this review (phew, this is going to be difficult). :)

The opening drew the reader right into the action and excitement of Vivian's world, but also set-up the inciting incident that would carry us through the rest of the book. From the start, I wanted to know what was so special about Benedict that Vivian would be thinking about him at time such as [in the opening]. I loved the push-and-pull between them and rooted for them right from the start. The twist about 60% into the book had me reading with my mouth opened for a good five minutes. It was brilliant and completely understandable given the circumstances. And of course, the ending was "aww"-inducing and heart-warming, even if it was a little rushed.

There are a few nit-picky things that threw me off just a bit. I mentioned earlier that I wanted to know what was so special about Benedict -- I do think that question could have been developed a little more. I never got a truly satisfactory answer to that question beyond "they loved each other." And the reveal for why the couple split up in the first place had almost no foreshadowing and probably should have come earlier than 80% into the book. The dialogue was appropriately formal (the book is set in the Regency period after all), but this formality carried through to the bedroom scenes. I found this level of formality, especially between these two characters given their background and history, just a tad too much.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed Her Perfect Match and cannot wait for the next book from Jess Michaels!
