Such a satisfying read!

This book is vastly different from what I normally read. But, after a friend's recommendation, I decided to give it a try. I am certainly glad that I did. After just a bit, I was very involved with the characters and their stories. I was anxious to know why so many people seemed to dislike Sang and kept cheering on Kevin's desire to help her. I must say that it was a very "satisfying read" in so many ways and now recommend it to other friends.

Dreams, Love, and Determination

Rickey Thornton has created a world of beauty and ugliness. Kevin West is a young man working for World Express, a delivery company much like UPS. His job is just that to him, simply a job. One day he delivers a package to a once stunning home now in disarray. He finds the person meant to sign for the package trying to pull vines and neglected plants in a garden gone wild. The woman is small and appears to be pregnant. Her name is Sang Branch. Kevin turns to leave but feels guilty about seeing a woman with little strength trying to do the work a man or gardener should be doing. He begins helping against her protests.

That day is the beginning of a strange friendship. Kevin is entranced by the secrets the garden holds as they are revealed. He asks questions but receives few answers. It becomes clear that the woman is alone. No body will help her. This surprises him because the community is small and seems accepting of others and each other.

At the risk of losing his job and even the love of his life, Houston, he continues to help in the garden and builds a friendship with Sang Branch who he learns is the widow of Rick Branch a famous Pulitzer Prize winning journalist from the Vietnam era. She claims to be Thai.

Kevin faces hatred for the first time in his life. The people in power in the community bully him trying to get him to stop helping Sang. He refuses. He is fighting prejudice based on lies and ill placed actions because of events that occurred during the Vietnam war. The garden takes shape one section at a time. Kevin learns that Sang's husband built the sprawling gardens for her as an expression of his love. Sang wants to bring the garden to its former glory so she can be with her husband again. She is dying and is able to keep that secret from Rick for quite some time.

The community comes together to help Kevin restore the gardens. Their help begins because of guilt then becomes a passion.

THE DREAMS WITHIN is a story of compassion and love for two couples. The kind of love that grew from friendship to true undying love. The kind of new love that grows and builds day by day. The kind of love Rick and Sang Branch had and Kevin and Houston West have. Years later Kevin and Houston return to Branch Park and the garden that has become a place of beauty that young couples share their vows in. Their daughter and her fiancé have chosen the garden as the place for their nuptials.

Rickey Thornton has created a story that transcends time, that overcomes hatred and prejudice, and with characters that readers will remember long after they have finished it. A few formatting problems caused me to stumble in the reading and took me out of the story for a moment. It is a book I recommend for anyone who likes to read a realistic love story. Thanks, Rickey!

This was a great book. I enjoyed it so much. The story was so captivating that once I started reading it I didn't want to put it down. I have also read Rickey Thornton's AS LONG AS I REMEMBER. I enjoyed it very much as well.

This book, which is very hard to find, provided significant amounts of valuable genealogical information for my family tree. I am so thankful that more obscure and difficult to find books like these are available on a commonly used site like Amazon. I live in a very rural area, so that access is everything.

About the Author

Rod K. Dishman, PhD, is a professor of exercise science, adjunct professor of psychology, and the director of the Exercise Psychology Laboratory at the University of Georgia at Athens. He is also adjunct professor in the Arnold School of Public Health at the University of South Carolina at Columbia. Dr. Dishman is a reviewer for more than 50 journals, including Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) and American Journal of Public Health. He has served on editorial boards of numerous journals in preventive medicine and public health, such as Exercise and Sport Science Reviews, Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, and Health Psychology and as an exercise consultant to public health agencies in the United States, Canada, and Europe. He has published approximately 150 peer-reviewed articles and written or edited several books related to physical activity and health.

Dr. Dishman is an American College of Sports Medicine fellow, where he has served as a member of the Research Advisory Committee and the Board of Trustees. He was a member of the jury for selection of the Olympic Prize in Sport Sciences awarded by the International Olympic Committee's Medical Commission and served on the scientific advisory committee for the 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. He resides in Athens, Georgia.

Gregory Heath, DHSc, MPH, has been contributing to the field of exercise science and health promotion for over 25 years. Dr. Heath is Guerry professor and head of the department of health and human performance at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Previously, he worked at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as lead health scientist in the Physical Activity and Health Branch. He has extensive experience in conducting studies and data analyses in the areas of physical activity epidemiology and public health practice.

Dr. Heath is a fellow in the Council on Epidemiology and Prevention, the American Heart Association, and the American College of Sports Medicine. He earned his doctor of health science degree in applied physiology and nutrition and his master's of public health in epidemiology from Loma Linda University.

I-Min Lee, MBBS, MPH, ScD, is an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, an associate professor of epidemiology at Harvard School of Public Health, and associate epidemiologist at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. Her main research interest is in the role of physical activity in promoting health and preventing chronic disease. This extends to characteristics associated with a physically active way of life, such as maintenance of ideal body weight. She also is concerned with issues relating to women's health. Lee has published more than 190 peer-reviewed articles and is a frequent invited presenter, teacher, and speaker at local, national, and international levels.

A reviewer for 30 journals, including Lancet and New England Journal of Medicine, Lee also serves on the editorial board for Harvard Women’s Health Watch, Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, and the Brazilian Journal of Physical Activity and Health.

Lee is an elected member of the American Epidemiological Society and a member of the Society for Epidemiologic Research, the American Heart Association, and the International Society for Physical Activity and Health. She is a member and fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and has served on the ACSM’s Research Advisory Committee and Board of Trustees. Dr. Lee also served on the scientific advisory committee for the 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans.

Lee is the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions, in particular the Young Epidemiologist Award from the Royal Society of Medicine in the United Kingdom (1999); the William G. Anderson Award from the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (2007); the Charles C. Shepard Award from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2009); and the ACSM’s Citation Award (2011).

Lee resides in Brookline, Massachusetts.

Andrew Dickson White (1832-1918) did more than any other American to impress upon late nineteenth- and twentieth century thought the idea that science and religion are enemies locked in combat on an almost military scale. In 1849, he entered Geneva College and later enrolled in Yale. After graduating, White joined the University of Michigan as a lecturer in history. He returned to New York and won election to the state senate. Finally, White went on to become the first president and cofounder of Cornell University. He also is the author of books, including Seven Great Statesmen in the Warfare of Humanity with Unreason and a 1906 autobiography.
